I am a HUGE  fan of  Dr. Michael Roizen & Dr. Mehmet Oz. You should be too!

If you value your health, your children’s health & your grandchildren’s health,  you need  to listen to the information that these two amazing Doctors provide.

By doing so, you will add years of healthy living to every member of your family.

They got me started on the road to better health & fitness. I am so glad that I was introduced to their work in 2007.

Since I became aware of these doctors, I have implemented many of the changes they suggest. The difference has been huge. My diet has improved. I lost weight. I started to exercise. I feel much better. I am convinced that by following their advice, I will enjoy a longer and healthier life.

This post is somewhat of a rehash of a post back in January. But after spending the last couple of days at the beach, I felt it was well worth revisiting.

I am shocked and dismayed. Let me explain why. As many of you may know, I live in Vancouver, British Columbia. For years and years, Canadians as a whole have always been thinner than Americans. Since I was young, we would always comment on how fat Americans were. The difference was noticeable as soon as you crossed the border. And on those cruise ships-well you knew who was American and who wasn’t. Not anymore. We have caught up. Boy have we ever and I know why.

I thought I had noticed it before, but figured it was a bad day. Not so! At the beach over the past few days, I saw virtually nothing but fat, out of shape people. They ranged in age from under 10 to over 60. These people make the Phillsbury Doughboy look like the poster child for muscle magazine.

Now that may sound a little harsh and politically incorrect but it is true. These people were not big boned, they were walking tubs of lard. They were all on their way to early health problems and a certain early death. For the young children that were obese, my heart sank. They were slowly being poisoned and killed. They didn’t even have a clue. Perhaps the sadder part is, neither did the parents that were responsible for the food that they eat day in and day out.

Today, we eat food that has been altered, stripped of fiber, stripped of nutrition, loaded with garbage and it is slowly killing us. We eat it because it is convenient to prepare and has been made to taste good.  I swear, if there was a way to make shit taste good, it would be found in the grocery store. Oh, wait a second, it is in the store. It’s that crap you find in all the center aisles. We buy tons of it. It is making us fat and preventing our bodies from functioning as they were designed to. Add the fact that we sit in front of a T.V. or computer for hours each day and we are are just killing ourselves.

We were designed to eat natural food and be active. But we are not doing that and as a result, the majority of people are grossly overweight and lack the body strength required to complete most daily tasks. Most of these people would not have the ability to do 10 minutes of any form of cardio. That’s wrong! It is frankly unfortunate and unacceptable. We need to change before the result is an unstoppable health crisis. At the rate we are going, future generations will have a shorter life expectancy than we do. That must change. It is our responsibility to do so.

For that reason, I encourage you to become familiar with Dr. Oz and Dr Roizen. They will help you to ensure that your health and that of your family’s improves thereby allowing you to live longer and better lives. I came across this rather long but very informative video of Dr. Roizen giving a fantastic lecture on how each and everyone of us can stay healthy for a long time. I watched it twice because it was so good. I urge you to make yourself comfortable and take in this video. IN FACT WATCH IT TWICE!

Get A Toned Butt Regardless Of Your Age!

Women over 50 who have a nice toned ass are sexy as hell. Plain and Simple.

I don’t think there is a man alive who will dispute the above comment. Not even a blind man.

The good news for women is that there are lots of exercises that you can do to get & keep a great looking butt.

Yes the photo is of a women under 50. So what! Women over 50 can also have a tight toned ass. Just ask Christine Auer, Sharon Simmons, Jan Griscom, Valerie Bertinelli, and others who have been profiled on the blog. They are all 50 or older and prove that age does not prevent you from having a great looking butt. Tosca Reno is another example and has also written a book on how to get your booty into great looking shape. There isn’t a woman out there that is over 50 who doesn’t want a flat stomach and a nice firm butt. Out of the two, getting rid of the belly fat seems to be the harder one. At least for most women it is. Losing the “extra junk in the trunk” is easier and seems to happen much faster. For Rhonda, losing the weight on the cheeks and the upper thighs happened really fast. The funny thing is that she wasn’t really big in those areas. The belly fat is taking a little longer to tame completely. But it is coming off.

Here are 4 great exercises that you can do to work those Glutes (butt). The great thing about these exercises is that you can do them at home and you do not need any special equipment. And yes, I know that the two people in the video are younger, but don’t let that stop you. The exercises will work equally well for you as they do for younger people. But they only work if you do them – so start today.

We do all of them, not every day but we do them. We incorporate them into our workout routines. Because we are hitting the gym 5 to 6 times a week, we switch up the exercises on a regular basis. Do the same exercises all the time and body gets used them and plateaus out. You stop progressing, so its important to keep your body guessing and keep challenging it. You get better results in a shorter period of time. That not only applies to your strength training but also to you cardio workouts.

There are many other exercises that you can do to  tighten and tone those Glutes. If you belong to a gym, you will also find machines that target that specific area. In our Gym, both the guys and the women pretty much line up for the machines. I guess no-one wants a fat ass the jiggles and hangs down to the back of their knees. Who in their right mind would?

Yeah, you might be on the “back nine” but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have an awesome looking figure that looks like it should be at least 10 years younger. With a little bit of work you can make it happen. Tight abs, tight ass and an attitude to match.

Speaking of attitude, that’s good for a posting in-and-of itself. When you get back into shape, it is amazing how your attitude and outlook changes for the better. The improve is significant – it has been for us. We may be over 50, but we sure as hell don’t feel like it or think like it. I guess we don’t act our age!

Drinking Enough This Summer?

No, I don’t mean the Coronas. They do taste good on a hot summer day though!

No not the Mojitos either, not the Jack Daniels, and definitely not the Pina Coladas.

I am referring to ice cold, pure, clean water.

And I am pretty sure I know what the answer is. Because it is usually the same one.

Odds are the answer is no. Most people drink far too little water,  far too much pop and other drinks such as coffee or tea which are diuretics. They actually dehydrate you. Not something you want  to have happen. Particularly in the summer. That gets to be a problem – heat stroke, etc.

Truth be known, not all that long ago we didn’t drink enough water either. Now we do. We drink at least the commonly accepted number of eight glass a day. Probably more.

As a result, several things have happened. Yes we have lost weight. All that water flushes out toxins and helps to get the bowls moving in the morning. That’s a very good thing since the majority of people eating a typical North American diet are not having enough bowl movements to get rid of all the extra crap-no pun intended-that is in their digestive systems. If you are not having at least one bowl movement a day – think about drinking more water.

Drinking all that water helps your skin look better in a very short period of time as well. Your skin is 75% water, so if you are not consuming enough water, it is pretty hard for your skin to look healthy and plump. Instead, your skin will look dry, dull and have more wrinkles. Not exactly what you want!

If you feel hungry all the time, you actually be may dehydrated and not actually hungry. You brain may sending the wrong signals, so before grabbing something to eat, have a glass of water and wait a few minutes. You might just find that what you really needed was water and not food. The good part about this is that you don’t overeat!

Now here a really odd sign that you may not be drinking enough water. It seems hard to believe but if your body is not taking in enough water, it stores it and you begin to bloat. Hard to have a flat stomach when you are bloated. It is the body’s survival mechanism. The more water you drink, the body expels what it doesn’t need along with toxins that accumulate in your system. Again, it assists in your weight loss.

This video does a pretty good job of explaining why water is so important and why you need to drink more of it. Dr. Kendra Pearsall is a Naturopathic Physician who has specialized in natural weight loss ever since she graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona in 2001. She knows her stuff.

Now with regards to exercises and toning up your muscles. Drink plenty of water. Especially in the hot summer months. If you are looking to sculpt and tone your muscles to get that sexy looking physique you absolutely must get that water into your system. Your muscle tissue are about 70% water. To get them looking their best, water must be present in the muscle. If it isn’t, it is almost impossible to get that toned look your after.

Remember, when I refer to water, it is pure and clean water. Forget about the pop, the sports drinks and anything that has tons of sugar added to it. You want to be drinking straight water. If you are a Jack Daniel’s connoisseur, you know there is only one way to drink it-straight. Drink your water that way too.

Living in British Columbia, we are lucky to have an abundant supply of fresh water. Most of the water originates from glaciers in the mountains. So the quality is excellent. However, we have a few  Brita Water Pitchers that we use everyday, they are fantastic. We also carry our water around in Stainless Steel water bottles. We still buy some water in the plastic bottles, but that is being reduced.

So, for the next few weeks, try a little experiment. Make an effort to increase your water consumption to around 8 glasses of pure water and see what happens to your body. Start with a glass before having your coffee in the morning and go from there. I think you will be pleasantly  surprised. We were!

Odds are you will increase your bowl movements, thereby have a lighter more comfortable feeling as you go through the day. The appearance of your skin will improve and you will begin to lose weight. Those are just a few of the many positive benefits. There are so many others, so give it try.

As I said, we were surprised at the changes for the better. You will be too.

Of course, having mentioned Mojitos at the beginning of the post, there is not anything wrong with having one in the evening out on the patio while unwinding. But don’t have too many.

Summer Super Foods!

What a weekend!

Perfect sensational weather, perfect boating, perfect wine & perfect BBQ’s!

We had friends over for a BBQ last night & we enjoyed two fantastic super foods.

The food was tasty as hell, filling, & best of all healthy, clean food.

For dinner we had what you see in the photo. I did the barbecuing, while Rhonda made the salsa with blueberries and the asparagus. Friends brought the white wine-lot’s of it. Wow what a dinner.

Now here is the great thing about this kind of dinner. The food is clean! That means none of it was processed in any way, shape or form. There were no additives or preservatives. It was the kind of food you were meant to eat. None of the garbage that makes you fat and sluggish.

What a bargain!! We bought the book about a month ago and love the diet. We are eating more food than ever before and losing weight. Rhonda has lost 5 pounds since starting. She is complaining that she always feels stuffed. Think about that, eating like a pig while losing weight. Now that’s an oxymoron if I have ever heard one. What a win-win kind of deal!

But all the food we eat is clean and we are really enjoying it!

Salmon and Blueberries are considered by many to be super foods. The health benefits are endless, they also sure beat the hell out of anything that a Big Mac can do for your body. We eat alot of salmon and we eat blueberries almost everyday. Blueberries with breakfast, blueberries in the salad at dinner. Speaking of dinner, last night we had food left over. So into the Tupperware it went, it will get eaten by Monday evening. It always does.

Eating healthy, clean food is so important if you want to lose weight and improve your health. In fact, you can exercise all you want, if you don’t clean up your diet, all the walking, all the strength training isn’t really going to help all that much. You absolutely need to eat clean food. A simple analogy is to put dirty fuel into your car and expect it to run well. It ain’t gonna happen! You need clean fuel to get top performance from your car. The same holds true for your body.

We have noticed a significant difference since we changed our eating habits. It may be referred to as “The Eat Clean Diet”, but we don’t look at it as a diet. To us the word diet means eating less while being hungry all the time. We are never hungry, are losing weight and feel much better. If that’s what a diet is all about, I’m all in, all the time!

Another plus of eating better is that it allows us to train harder more often at the gym. By eating better, training harder, we can continue to improve our health and fitness levels.

It seems to be working because people are always telling us how much better we look. The question we get all the time is – “What are you guys doing? You look fantastic!” We tell them exactly what we are doing. I also tell them to make sure they read “Fitness Over 50″ each and every day”

Summer in Vancouver!

It’s the time of year Vancouver & surrounding area are spectacular.

So, I will be running a 4 part series over the next 4 Saturday’s showing off the finer points of Vancouver.

Before you know it, you will be booking a trip up here & we will be sharing a beer or two!

I figure that for the next couple of weeks as we enter the busiest time for summer holidays, who wants to read about exercise on the weekends. Monday to Friday is enough, so lets keep the weekends open for enjoying the outdoors. The next couple of weekends are for “R&R”.

BBQ’s, beaches, boating, golf and all the other fun stuff! That’s what summer weekends are all about!

Having said that, we are still hitting the gym 5-6 times a week. Have to keep that beach body in top form!

So enjoy the videos. They are about 10 minutes long but really show off the Vancouver area.

There will be 3 more videos over the next 3 Saturdays. I hope you enjoy them all.

This is going to be a short post, as will be the next three Saturdays. Rhonda and I have lots planned for the weekend. So we need to “Get Up & Get Out There!

Sex Over 50-Oh Yeah Baby!!

No, I am not talking about Kim Cattrall, I am referring to my significant other. Truly the better half that keeps this family together and I am very fortunate to have her.

By the way Kim Cattrall is 53 and pretty damn hot. Older women really rock!

Yes I am 52 and Rhonda is 50. But compared to a good many people our age, we are youngsters. Shaking your head yet? Well let me explain.

I think when we were younger, in our 20′s and 30′s, we had a stereotypical image and profile of what people over 50 are. We got it from our parent’s generation. At the time, we viewed turning 50 as being old, being fuddy-duddies, being unattractive and way past having sex. We also, assumed that because turning 50 was so far off, we didn’t have to worry about becoming that age.

Well, 50 came pretty damn fast. For some people, isn’t hasn’t been a pleasant occasion. They have indeed become the above.

Well not us! A funny thing happened as we turned 50. We found out that 50 isn’t old, we haven’t turned into fuddy-duddies, we haven’t become unattractive, and the sex has remained frequent and it is fantastic. Hopefully you say the same things about having turned 50 too!

Sex over 50 does exist and it is fantastic. Is it the best sex ever? It can very well be. It is not inhibited, it is intense, it is playful, it is hardly boring and it is extremely satisfying! And so it should be!

I hope that you are enjoying this part of your life. Being over 50, certainly doesn’t mean you need give up on things that you enjoyed before. Sure, some things change. They always do. But being healthy, being in great shape and having mind blowing great sex should not be things that you leave behind once you hit 50.

We haven’t left any of those behind. In fact, we have done the opposite. We are in better health, better shape, the sex is better than ever and it’s awesome.
